Albert 'Pat' Beasley was born in Stourbridge in July 1912. An outside-right, he caught the eye of Herbert Chapman while playing in the Birmingham League and was signed by Arsenal for £550 in May 1931, initially as a reserve to Joe Hume and Cliff Bastin.
Beasley had five good years at Highbury, winning a League Championship medal in 1933-34, although he missed two FA Cup Finals for the Gunners. He scored 24 goals in 89 league games, before moving to Huddersfield Town for £750 in 1936. In 1938, he was in Huddersfield's beaten FA Cup Final side and altogether netted over 25 goals in 116 senior outings for the Terriers. In 1939 he won his only England cap, against Scotland.
Beasley spent much of the war overseas but returned to join Fulham in 1945, guesting for Arsenal in 1945-46. He was appointed captain at Craven Cottage and switch effectively from winger to inside-forward and then to left-half.
He led Fulham to the Second Division title in 1948-49, missing only three matches, and in 1950, after 164 senior appearances and 13 goals, he joined Bristol City as player-manager.
He retired as a player in 1952 and reisgned as manager at Ashton Gate in January 1958. The Blues brought him to St.Andrews but, when he first arrived, he though he was to act as assistant to Arthur Turner. However, Beasley was made joint manager by chairman Harry Morris, taking over as acting manager in September 1958, before becoming team manager in January 1959.
Blues reached the Fairs Cup Final in 196, but the competition had begun in 1958 and took almost two years to complete. Beasley, who was never an extrovert either as a player or a manger, resigned in May 1960, shortly after Blues loss to Barcelona. He managed Dover for four years (1960-64) and later retired to Somerset.
Pat Beasley died in Taunton on 27th February 1986.
