Despite the controversy surrounding his appointment, Ron Saunders was largely accepted based on his excellent record at Aston Villa. He put together the 'hard-team' of the early-eighties, replacing the more skillful players with 'battlers'. However, this led to the Club's relegation two seasons later, and although promotion was immediate, a run of 15 defeats and 2 draws in 17 matches, led to his dismissal.
